How to exercise-proof your makeup routine

Did you know that regular exercise is one of the keys to healthy skin?

When you exercise, the blood flow increases. This helps nourish the cells in our bodies and keep them vital. The blood carries nutrients and oxygen to our cells to our skin and also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals from working cells.

Oxidation is a normally occurring process in the body. The body’s oxygen splits into single atoms with unpaired electrons. Electrons like to be in pairs, so these atoms, so called free radicals, scavenge the body to find other electrons they can pair up with. This causes damage to cells, proteins and even our DNA. Free radicals can be produced in the body naturally, but they are also introduced from outside sources, like pollution. Pollution is a big reason why free radicals are becoming more prevalent.

The damage of free radicals eventually appears on the skin in the form of wrinkles, sagging, dryness, dullness and unwanted pigmentation, like age spots and broken blood vessels.

So exercising and helping the body carry away these free radicals is a great way to help your skin stay healthy. When you exercise, you cleanse your skin from the inside.

Some skin conditions such as acne and eczema can sometimes be stress-related. These conditions can be improved with exercise since it has shown that exercising helps reduce the stress in our bodies.

Researchers are still investigating the exact link between stress and our skin, and so far studies have shown that the glands in our skin that produce oil, the sebaceous glands, are influenced by stress hormones. So exercising has many positive effects on your skin!

Do you like wearing makeup to the gym? As long as you use skin-friendly products specifically designed to let your skin breath you are good to go! Be careful to choose products that do not clog your pores.

Sometimes you just want your skin to look a little bit less shiny when working out, and for those occasions our pro makeup artist recommends going for a primer that controls the oiliness of the skin. Our favourite is of course The Base Primer.

Are you looking for a lighter base makeup? Then we recommend mixing 1 pump of The Base Primer with 1 pump of The Base Foundation for a light and easy base.

For a medium to full coverage look we recommend using 2-3 pumps of The Base Foundation. This way you will create a makeup base that will not only stay in place all day long, no matter how sweaty and warm the workout sessions, but that will also remain flawless and cover exactly what you would like it to cover.
